The Toshiba Portege Z835 is another in the series of “Ultrabooks”, marketed as an alternative to Apple’s MacBook Air.

This model is the first Ultrabook released by Toshiba. It comes in a grey magnesium alloy chassis and feels remarkably solid given its dimensions of 12.4” x 8.9” x 0.6”, weighing in at only 2.4 pounds (half a pound lighter than the Apple MacBook).

Currently listed at a price as low as $899-$999 (depending on model) with a full 128 GB SSD memory, it offers good value and it is currently the cheapest Ultrabook type laptop available in the market. However, the penalty for this attractive price is that it is fitted with an Intel Core i5 CPU whereas many of the higher priced Ultrabooks come with the Core i7 CPU. It may well be a sacrifice justified by its lower price.

Everyday users will not notice much performance degradation although benchmark tests do show superior performance with a Core i7 CPU. Tests show that the CPU has no problem in handling everyday computing tasks, such as Web surfing, e-mail, basic office productivity, and streaming HD video.

Toshiba will release higher-end models in this series and you will be able to upgrade the CPU at a later date if you so wish.

The rating of electronic devices is always a balance between price and features. Of the Ultrabook laptops tested so far, the Portege Z835 comes out on top given its extensive range of add-ons. The only drawback with this Ultrabook is that the keyboard itself has been shrunk and users with stubby fingers may find that the letter keys have a small surface area. On the positive side, the keyboard is backlit which is an advantage if and when you need to work in poor ambient light.

The Z835 is fitted with the best selection of ports seen on an Ultrabook so far as the designers have taken advantage of the extra fraction of an inch on the hinge edge to put a full-size HDMI port and two USB 2.0 ports. There is also a faster USB 3.0 port on the right hand side, accompanied by a case-lock slot on the right and SD card slot and jacks for headphones and a microphone on the left. Set above the screen is a 1.3-megapixel webcam.

A Gigabit Ethernet port on the back is a rare find on an Ultrabook, since most rely exclusively on 802.11n Wi-Fi. Unexpectedly, the Z835 comes with WiDi 2.0, Intel’s wireless streaming solution that allows you to stream HD content to any HDTV through a Netgear Push2TV adapter (a $99 dollar extra). It’s an unexpected feature in this form factor and price range, seen only in the much more expensive models.

Unlike other Ultrabooks, which all mimic Apple’s click-pad design, the Portege Z835 has a traditional touch pad with a smaller surface area and separate left and right mouse buttons. The overall response is positive and the touch pad has a conveniently placed On/Off button located immediately above it. This makes it easy to disable the touch pad in favor of a traditional mouse device. In comparison, the bigger click pads on the Acer, Asus and Lenovo models have not equaled the quality of the Apple industry leading touch pad.

The top rated features of this laptop, apart from the extensive range of features, is that it is extremely light and has an excellent battery life.
